Welcome to Missiology

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour (Luke 4:18-19).

What is mission?  Mission can be viewed as "the church, striving to proclaim the gospel to all men has sought to fulfill its function as the herald of the good news brought to us by Christ and promulgated through her by virtue of these two fundamental exhortations: 'Put on the new nature' and 'Be reconciled to God' (Pope Paul VI, 'Evangelii Nuntiandi Evangelization in the modern world' in Flannery, Austin Evangelization Today. New York: Costello Pubishing Company, 1977, p. 3)

This guide aims to present you with some of the resources held by the Veech Library on missiology, to use as a starting point into study of this area.  Dictionaries, guides, handbooks and similar are listed as well as suggested journals and websites useful in this field.  Resource lists on the history of missions, mission theory, other religions and missions today are also given.  Let us know how useful you find this guide.

NB Each title is briefly referenced with the following details - author/editor, title, year and call number, except for those that have the year in their call number.  The call numbers of each title contain the link from the title to the Veech Library catalogue.  Titles can be reserved by you by contacting the library to hold the item for you, or, if the title is borrowed, by reserving it via the catalogue.   Most links open into the catalogue in a new window but some open so they replace the guide.  To return to the guide from these screens, simply click on the back arrow in the top left hand corner of the screen.  To return to the guide from links that open in a new window, click on the red box with the white X in the top right hand corner of the screen.
